After Firefish imploded a few months ago, my interest in continuing my interest in my single-user server project died.
Tonight I decided to replace it with a Pixelfed server. It went about as smoothly as you can imagine. The only issue is the server gives 500 errors after making changes to the .env file and running php artisan config:cache to rebuild the cache—the cause is beyond me.
Overall, a fun Sunday project.

If you ever wondered: if you have to pay #tax for foreign donation in #Poland, you're going to have to run to the tax office with paper form — because making "polish tax identifier" field optional in the online form would cost a fortune.
"""
[…] Enabling taxpayers to file the SD-Z2 form electronically requires developing and implementing a new template in the IT systems. In turn, this requires changing the inheritance and donation regulations first, and prior earmarking of substantial funding for modification of IT systems (the amount being similar whether a single or many changes are implemented).
For these reasons, the demand made on this undeniably important matter, but requiring incurring disproportionately high expenditures at the moment, compared to the number of cases to which it applies, will be taken into consideration at the next amendment of inheritance and donation tax regulations, which will also include other changes to the form.

A form of personal transportation, like a Tesla, but produced with simple bio-engineering out of proteic polymers rather than metal and plastic. Normally for a single passenger, but could carry two in a pinch, and some modest amount of goods. Totally green-powered, and could be recharged even in transit. Superb off-road agility and can drive through 3-foot-deep water. Drive-by wire and voice activation. Available in several colors.

Do you have any kind of blog or resources to talk about how to set up an extreme minimalist no-OS bare metal Zynq firmware?
Ideally I'd like just a single source file (not generated by vivado, something I can actually write from scratch) that I can just build with arm-none-eabi-g , put on a SD card…

Abstract: We present Full SMS, a multipurpose graphical user interface (GUI)-based software package for analysing single-molecule spectroscopy (SMS) data. SMS typically delivers multiparameter data -- such as fluorescence brightness, lifetime, and spectra -- of molecular- or nanometre-scale particles such as single dye molecules, quantum dots, or fluorescently labelled biological macromolecules. Full SMS allows an unbiased statistical analysis of fluorescence brightness through level resolution and clustering, analysis of fluorescence lifetimes through decay fitting, as well as the calculation of second-order correlation functions and the display of fluorescence spectra and raster-scan images. Additional features include extensive data filtering options, a custom HDF5-based file format, and flexible data export options. The software is open source and written in Python but GUI-based so it may be used without any programming knowledge. A multi-process architecture was employed for computational efficiency. The software is also designed to be easily extendable to include additional import data types and analysis capabilities.

Best addition to any #Node package.json, #PHP composer.json or other dependency managers file would be a mandatory „why“ field for each single dependency which requires a minimum number of sensible words.
Could make devs think twice before adding and help (me) when upgrading projects after some time.

I'm pleased with myself. I'm trying to fake animation in Beamer slides using overlays. Fiddly, 1 line per each of multiple images. In org-mode.
But I've discovered org-mode macros, which can handle arbitrary emacs-lisp, so I can do it with one macro and a single invocation (with the number of images as a parameter).
Layering 3-ish languages (org-mode, e-lisp, Beamer-latex) isn't ideal, but it works. I just put
{{{oxeast 14}}}
in my org file and get t…

I'm a bit over cyclists not sounding their bells when approaching pedestrians on a shared path. My husband and I walk side by side on the path and when we hear a bell we wave in acknowledgement and move to single file to allow the bike to pass. This afternoon not one bicycle or scooter bothered and a couple came so close and so fast as to startle us both.
At one stage my husband pointed out a bird on the grass alongside the path and his arm nearly collided with a scooter rider who …

How crazy/horrible/stupid would it be to write a single-pass streaming parser for ELF as part of a firmware updater?
More specifically, you're given a chance to look at each byte of data once. You can either write it to flash immediately, update some local variables (like "offset of .text"), or ignore it.
But once you've seen a given part of the file, you can't rewind and look at it again later (since I'm flashing an image that might be larger than avail…

How normal people watch #anime:
1. Fetch a random version and watch it.
How I watch anime:
1. Find a particularly good quality version and fetch it.
2. Discover that subtitles are HDMV PGS, and my TV probably can't handle that. Try writing a 5-minute sample to my pendrive to confirm, and check whether video and audio work fine.
3. Discover that my TV can't handle exFAT. Try again with NTFS.
4. Video and audio work fine, subtitles don't. Look for other subtitles.
5. Discover that the other subtitles don't sync well with my video. Try to find matching subtitles.
6. Give up and resync the previous subtitles instead. Remux a 5-minute sample to my pendrive.
7. The sample worked fine. Remux the whole movie to the pendrive.
8. Get an I/O error. Reconnect the pendrive to a different USB port and try again.
9. Discover that you've connected it to a slow port. Abort and try again.
10. Discover that the movie lags now. Perhaps it's because the file is large. Try splitting it by chapter. Use mpv to confirm that subtitles adjust fine to the split version.
11. Discover that the movie still lags. Try rebooting the TV.
12. The movie plays smoothly now. However, the TV can't handle subtitles from the second file. Remux as a single file again.
13. Watch the movie. Discover that it starts lagging again at end credits.
14. Watch the end credits on the PC.
